the afari difference
Real culture. Real impact.
Stories worth the journey.
Travel that gives back to the people and places that make Africa unforgettable told around the fire, the way it should be.
Why Afari Adventures?
Because every trip is planned personally by a founder who grew up with wildlife in Zimbabwe and has guided across Africa since 1994. African roots, European understanding, 30+ years of trusted local partners and itineraries that include the highlights you came for plus the hidden gems only a local knows.
Why trust Afari Adventures?
Even when you travel alone, you are never alone. We follow your journey through social platforms for extra security and our local partners stand ready to welcome you and step in if needed. Three decades of relationships on African soil mean help is always one call - and one friend - away.
Why this way of travelling?
Tailor-made, never off-the-shelf. Choose fully guided luxury, or guided self-drive where you take the wheel with an expert alongside, or independent self-drive for experienced travellers, where we write the itinerary, book the accommodation and recommend activities. Our 4x4s reach elephant tracks and remote corners where tour buses can never go.
Why get in touch now?
The best lodges, guides and seasonal wildlife windows are booked far in advance. Because every Afari Adventures trip is hand-crafted by the founder himself, we only take on a limited number of journeys each season. Start the conversation early and we'll build something unforgettable, at your pace.

our unique approach
Don't just visit the village, Live it.
Every Afari journey can include our signature village workshop which is a day, or more, spent in a typical rural African community. You don't watch from a safari vehicle: you join in. You help with the chores, learn the language of the land, share a pot of sadza around the fire and sleep under the same stars as your hosts. It is the most honest way to understand Africa and the moment most of our guests say changed them forever.
our story
Born on the edge of Hwange National Park
Born and Raised close to nature
Our founder was born in Zimbabwe, on the edge of Hwange National Park, where wildlife wasn't a destination — it was daily life. Livestock had to be locked in kraals each evening or the hyenas and lions would take them. Elephants raided the banana plantations. Buffalo roamed the streets. Co-existing with nature wasn't a philosophy, it was the rhythm of home. That's where the love of wildlife began.
Learning about the wild
In 1994 he became a trainee canoe guide on the Zambezi. From there his career took him across Southern Africa with a leading South African overland company, then with a British operator that sent him guiding from Cape Town to Ethiopia — often exploring new routes and writing the route notes himself.
Life in the Netherlands & the birth of Afari
In 2005 he moved to the Netherlands. "You can take an African out of Africa, but not Africa out of him." After a few years in Europe, Afari Adventures was born — a way to bring together deep African knowledge and a clear understanding of how Europeans love to travel.
He still leads trips in Africa every year, scouts new destinations, and keeps three decades of relationships with trusted local partners alive and warm. Every Afari itinerary is planned personally by him. That's why we say: with Afari, you're not a tourist — you're a friend on holiday.
On the ground, Afari works hand-in-hand with a small, like-minded team of local guides — chosen personally over years of shared trails. Each one has an outstanding guiding reputation, a deep understanding of what our clients need, and the same gift our founder has: they are natural storytellers who bring Africa to life around the campfire, on the game drive, and in the quiet moments in between.
